Even as patient expectations for their healthcare continue to evolve, one factor remains central to how families choose a dentist: network participation.
New Humana research shows that 68% of adults in the United States who make dental insurance decisions for their household are more likely to choose a dentist if that provider is in network.1 Only 7% say they are less likely to do so, while 16% say it makes no difference (and that preference has increased year over year).1
The data also shows generational differences in this preference for network participation.1 Among adults 55─74 years old, 74% say they are more likely to seek out an in-network dentist, which is compared to 59% of adults 18─24 years old.1 This data indicates that in-network preference is consistent across generations but is stronger among older adults.1
The research also shows that network participation influences loyalty.1 Among patients who remained with the same dentist, 46% cite in-network status as a primary reason for staying.1
As practices evaluate their growth strategies, the Humana data reinforces the practical reality that in-network participation remains closely aligned with how patients search for, select and stay with a dentist.1
