When families choose a dentist, the actual clinical care is only part of the equation. New Humana research shows that coverage alignment, convenience and in-office experience all play important roles in whether patients continue seeing the same provider over time.1
Among dental insurance decision makers, being in network is the most frequently cited reason for staying with a dentist, with 46% saying in-network status influences their decision to continue care.1 Convenience also plays a major role, with 43% of respondents citing location, scheduling ease or appointment availability as key factors.1 Additionally, 42% say friendly interactions with dental hygienists contribute to their decision to return.1
Despite these drivers of loyalty, long-term relationships are not guaranteed. Only 25% of respondents report staying with the same dentist for 5 years or more, suggesting that continuity of care can be fragile, even when patients report positive experiences.1
Together, these findings highlight an opportunity for providers to focus on the factors patients say matter most. By aligning coverage, reducing friction around access and supporting positive staff interactions, dental practices may be better positioned to build sustained patient relationships over time.
