Humana's SALUTE network resource group (NRG) connects employees who have a passion for honoring and supporting military service members, veterans, spouses, and their families. The group helps to advance an understanding of the needs of military and veteran consumers. Open to all Humana employees, SALUTE offers a forum for the exchange of ideas, building a community and an opportunity to drive measurable business outcomes. The NRG’s mission is to serve as a first line resource on Humana policy, advocacy, health and community engagement for our military and veteran employees, their families and allies.
Supporting success through transition and beyond
In partnership with Humana’s veteran recruitment team, SALUTE NRG developed a range of veteran- and military-focused resources for career advancement. With an understanding that the transition to civilian work may be complicated and present a range of challenges, SALUTE holds quarterly virtual sessions focused on easing the transition from military to corporate culture to increase veteran success at Humana. These quarterly sessions are designed to support newly-separated veterans and spouses, but anyone interested in supporting is welcome to attend. The sessions cover cultural differences between Humana and the military, veteran FAQs, participation opportunities in SALUTE’s mentorship program, and the basics of Humana’s corporate structure. Additional available resources include interim career coaching, resume writing support and a guidebook to help new Humana employees through the transition.
SALUTE routinely engages with executive sponsors and human resources to advocate on behalf of veterans and military families. Initiatives include advocating for policy change related to compensation following an extended deployment and the creation of positions designed to better support veteran employee success. SALUTE works to create an inclusive environment for our active military, veterans, spouses, and their families. SALUTE offers a variety of in person and virtual programming to create belonging for military veterans and spouses including company-wide town halls, monthly informal coffee talks, networking and development opportunities, and volunteer events across the country.
Expressing gratitude for those who served
SALUTE NRG activates individuals and groups around common causes to support initiatives important to veteran and military families across the country. In late 2022, SALUTE partnered with Humana’s Asian & Pacific Islander, Women’s, and Caregiver NRGs in support of the Tri Ân Foundation — Tri Ân means deep gratitude and thankfulness in Vietnamese. The Tri Ân Foundation is currently constructing a monument, in Louisville, KY, to honor and demonstrate an appreciation for the sacrifice of the millions of American and Vietnamese people who fought side-by-side against communist aggression to protect the freedom and independence of the South Vietnamese people. The Tri Ân Foundation monument is developed to support healing of those affected by the trauma of the Vietnam War. The Foundation has been intentional with the design of the monument, sourcing materials from Vietnam to allow visitors to touch the land when they touch the monument.
Supporting the nationwide military and veteran community
SALUTE NRG is dedicated to supporting active military and veterans by giving group members a chance to utilize their servant leadership skills while supporting the community. The NRG leads many volunteer and community assistance events across the country, including food distributions for individuals and families facing food insecurity. The group supports additional causes related to military and veteran health such as Out of the Darkness Community Walks — a national effort with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention that helps advance understanding and end stigma of mental health challenges.
