Humana’s Specialty Insurance organization joined forces with Humana Healthy Horizons and TeamSmile, a nationwide non-profit organization that brings together oral health professionals and professional athletic organizations, to provide life-changing dentistry to children who face barriers in accessing dental care.
Thirty Humana associates volunteered a total of more than 200 hours in 2025 to help TeamSmile deliver care to nearly 800 children across the three events - and the impact does not stop there. The TeamSmile Dental Home Project, powered by DentaQuest, connects at-risk children with long-term dental care resources, including a dentist who accepts Medicaid or serves TeamSmile children for free. By providing children with a dental home, TeamSmile is increasing access and ensuring continuity of care for those who need it most.
“TeamSmile is proud to partner with Humana, as we have a common Mission that we’re able to fulfill through the TeamSmile model. It’s wonderful to witness Humana put their words into action, and take their time, talents and treasures to serve children in need,” said John McCarthy, Executive Director, TeamSmile. “Our TeamSmile model is really special and impactful, yet it’s the people that bring it to life, and the people at Humana are serious about serving others. It’s beautiful to witness.”
Humana’s multi-departmental collaboration represents the company’s commitment to improving the health and well-being of everyone in the communities it serves, starting with the youngest. By uniting its expertise in dental care with its deep understanding of Medicaid populations’ complex health needs, Humana has a special opportunity to make a positive impact. TeamSmile, whose volunteer dentists, dental assistants, dental hygienists and educators have provided more than $20 million in free pediatric dental care since the organization’s inception in 2007, shares Humana’s vision and is the right partner to make that impact even stronger.
TeamSmile uses the power of sports to create fun, engaging experiences that take the fear out of oral care. Children can meet professional athletes and cheerleaders, dance with mascots, and have fun with face painting while receiving vital dental care ranging from cleanings to crowns. They also learn about the importance of oral hygiene and receive toothbrushes and other necessities to maintain a healthy regimen at home. Humana serves as a National Sponsor for TeamSmile, and was onsite to support events with the Kansas City Chiefs, the Arizona Cardinal and the New Orleans Saints.
“We are grateful for the incredible work TeamSmile does to improve the lives of children every day,” said Michelle Hart, Associate Vice President for Strategy Advancement – Dental Network Development at Humana and TeamSmile board member. “As we aspire to build healthier communities for all, we are so proud of our collaboration. Together, we can make a meaningful difference and improve children’s quality of life.”
Nestor Morillo, Director, Individual Specialty Dental and Vision Sales manages Humana’s relationship with TeamSmile, volunteered at each event site and witnessed the impact of the partnership firsthand. He adds, “The goals and mission of TeamSmile directly aligns with our mission at Humana of providing a human approach to healthcare. Seeing the children’s smiles light up the stadiums reminds us how much that mission truly means.”
