Humana Employees Volunteer 17,761 Hours in Honor of Dr. Martin Luther King

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) Day 2023 marked an important milestone at Humana. For the first time, all associates were able to celebrate the holiday as a company-wide day off. This unifying moment exemplifies Humana’s culture in action and the company’s work to advance inclusion, diversity and equity, both within the company and in the communities we serve.

MLK Day is the only federal holiday observed as a National Day of Service, earning the motto “a day on, not a day off.” Humana celebrated across the enterprise through in-person and virtual experiences to reflect on Dr. King’s legacy and to honor him through service. The Office of Inclusion & Diversity (I&D) hosted a virtual kick-off event where employees heard from Reverend Ronald English, who served as a ministerial assistant to Dr. King at Ebenezer Baptist Church and delivered the prayer at his funeral. Reverend English is still active in the fight for civil rights and equality where his work focuses on addressing health disparities within marginalized communities. During his remarks, Reverend English shared recollections of Dr. King, the civil rights movement of the 1960s and advice for individuals who continue to fight for justice in the present.

The week of celebration of Dr. King and his legacy continued with in-person volunteer events in Atlanta, Houston, Louisville and Tampa where employees participated in parades, assembled baby bundles and snack packages for those in need, cleaned and beautified parks and assisted in a senior health fitness event. In harmony with Humana’s commitment to community, members of the Enterprise Volunteerism and I&D teams collaborated to curate a Volunteer Playbook featuring in-person and virtual opportunities across the country. Employees can access the online Playbook at any time to find opportunities to give back in service to their communities. Employees who recorded their volunteer efforts were entered for a chance to win a $1,000 donation to their charity of choice. To date, 2,634 employees have recorded 17,761 volunteer hours in the month of January 2023 in honor of MLK Day.
