Creating Opportunities is How Humana Supports Women in the Workplace

Humana celebrates diverse backgrounds and intentionally creates an inclusive environment where each employee not only feels a sense of belonging but is empowered to lift one another up.

Women are at the heart of our company where 71% of all employees, 67% of our managers and 45% of our senior leaders are women. This is one of many reasons Humana was named Best Employer for Women in 2022 and continues to align actions to values by advancing women, across all racial and ethnic groups, into leadership roles in the company.

“One of the things that makes Humana unique is the fact that we are predominantly women,” said Leslie Clements, Lead, Corporate Communications. “I think it makes us special, and it's part of why I have felt empowered to grow and develop myself and my career. I’ve felt very supported as a woman at Humana.”

Voices uplifted
Humana supports employees by offering opportunities for personal and professional development through network resource groups (NRGs). The Women’s NRG, Humana’s largest with more than 9,000 members, is committed to providing avenues for women and allies to realize their full potential by offering opportunities for personal and professional development, and therefore promoting women in our organization, the community and the communities we serve.

On International Women’s Day, the Women’s NRG (WNRG) and GenUs, our intergenerational NRG, co-hosted a panel discussion—Women Supporting Women: An Intergenerational Panel—to launch our 2023 Women’s History Month celebrations, themed Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories, which recognizes women, past and present, in every community who have devoted and advocated for Women decade after decade.

“Women’s History Month is a great time to stop and reflect on the courage of the women who came before us,” said Karen Moran, SVP, Humana Military, President. “We must take time to honor and celebrate the path these women have created for us and continue their hard work by lifting other women up and creating opportunities for the women who will come behind us.”

Women in technology
The field of technology has a rapidly evolving landscape, and we recognize that women are critical to technological and digital transformations. Humana’s Women in Technology (WIT) chapter, formed in partnership with WNRG, works to celebrate and expand contributions, innovation and knowledge-sharing of women in technology in our workplace, marketplace and community. Mentorship and resources are available to promote professional opportunities that support the WIT mission as women support women at Humana.

Transformational leadership
In partnership with Blue Circle Leadership, Humana offers an interactive, 8-month virtual program—Transformational Leadership for Multicultural Women—designed for highly aspirational women leaders to expand their leadership skills, build a strategic network and navigate career growth through the unique perspective as a multicultural woman.

Supporting, empowering, trailblazing
Our support of the advancement of women extends beyond the virtual walls of our workplace. In September 2022, Humana hosted and sponsored the 5th annual DiversityInc Women of Color and Their Allies conference in our corporate hometown, Louisville, Kentucky. The annual event brings together inclusion and diversity thought leaders and researchers from across the country to address the challenges women of color face in corporate America, as well as celebrate their numerous and often underappreciated contributions.

Conferences such as this provide a tremendous learning opportunity for attendees, with leaders across industries presenting their perspective and knowledge, and give Humana employees a chance to come together and feel a sense of belonging and renewed sense of purpose.

Our employees are a reflection of the communities and members we serve. Supporting and elevating the women employees at Humana means that we can also do so for those for the women in our communities. We are proud of the commitments and work that have gotten us here but recognize there is still work to be done.
