Distinction demonstrates the health plan’s commitment to culturally competent care

South Carolina, Jan.10, 2024 -- Humana Healthy Horizons, the Medicaid business of leading health and well-being company Humana, announced it has received Health Equity Accreditation in South Carolina from the National Committee of Quality Assurance (NCQA). The Health Equity Accreditation is a nationally recognized Accreditation that purchasers, regulators and consumers can use to distinguish organizations that meet rigorous standards in serving a diverse population.

“We are committed to improving the lives of South Carolinians and reducing the disparities and barriers to equitable health care that so many of our members face every day,” said Dietrick Williams, President, Humana Healthy Horizons – South Carolina. “We are honored that the NCQA has recognized our efforts with this important distinction.”

NCQA’s Health Equity Accreditation evaluates how well an organization complies with standards in the following areas: organizational readiness; race/ethnicity, language, gender identity and sexual orientation; access and availability of language services; practitioner network cultural responsiveness; culturally and linguistically appropriate services programs; and reducing health care disparities.

"Our mission at Humana is to improve access to care, improve quality of care, and address the non-medical barriers to healthy living," said J. Nwando Olayiwola, MD, MPH, Chief Health Equity Officer and Senior Vice President for Humana. “Receiving this accreditation in South Carolina is a testament to our work toward achieving a more equitable healthcare ecosystem in all the communities we serve.”

Humana Healthy Horizons – South Carolina serves over 25,000 members across the state, with a keen focus on addressing the most pressing health-related social needs affecting the communities it serves.

“Cultural competency is crucial to providing high quality health care,” said NCQA President Margaret E. O’Kane. “Organizations achieving Health Equity Accreditation are leaders in closing the ethnic and racial disparities gap, and NCQA commends them for their dedication.”

NCQA’s Health Equity Accreditation and Health Equity Accreditation Plus programs offer an actionable framework for helping health systems continuously improve—and prioritize—health equity for the patients and communities they serve.  Learn more by visiting the NCQA Health Equity Accreditation program page.
