Financial habits are shaping the way Americans engage with dental care, and providers who understand these generational patterns are better positioned to meet their patients’ evolving expectations.
Recent Humana research reveals a striking contrast between the youngest and oldest generations. Generation Z (13-28 years old) is planning ahead, actively saving for both routine and unexpected dental expenses. In fact, 38% of Gen Z respondents report prioritizing savings for planned dental health costs, which is more than any other age group. They value flexibility and want customizable insurance options that help them manage costs without sacrificing care quality.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, the Silent Generation (79 years old and older) is less focused on budgeting, but their trust in longstanding, in-network providers runs deep. While 60% of this group doesn’t budget for surprise dental bills, 76% prioritize care from in-network dentists they know and rely on.
These generational distinctions underscore a broader truth: One-size-fits-all solutions no longer meet the moment. Providers who offer flexible, transparent and personalized experiences will be best equipped to engage diverse patient populations, now and into the future.
