The average older American spends about half of their waking hours alone, a number which undoubtedly increased during the pandemic. That’s why places specifically designed for seniors to socialize, keep active, and learn about how to stay healthy are crucial to combatting loneliness.
The Humana Neighborhood Center in Metairie near New Orleans is an example of such a place. In the words of Humana members who frequent the Center:
“I had a heart attack at the beginning of the pandemic, and I was going through cardiac rehab. Well in the mail I get this little card from Humana, we got this great virtual class, and the class was great. And by doing it initially I lost 40 pounds and made a big difference. It's a good fulfillment, you get to love the people.”
“If I didn't have friends, I would've been dead years ago. That's one of the reasons I love to come over to Humana. All my good friends are here. Oh yeah, I love it.”
“We became even closer using Zoom during the pandemic because we got to see each other in our houses, we got to know everybody's grandkids, great grandkids, their pets, their dogs, and their furniture and everything.”
Humana Neighborhood Centers, both in-person and online, offer special events, programs and activities designed to improve physical and mental health. SilverSneakers classes at the Neighborhood Centers are available to Humana Medicare members whose plans include the SilverSneakers benefit. SilverSneakers classes are also offered at participating gyms and fitness facilities. Many other services offered at the Neighborhood Centers can be used by anyone, including those who are not Humana members, at no cost.
Humana health benefit plans have exclusions and limitations and terms under which the coverage may be continued in force or discontinued. For costs and complete details of the coverage, call or write your Humana insurance agent or the company.
