HAPI, Humana's network resource group (NRG) for Asian & Pacific Islander (API) employees and allies, is a voluntary, employee-driven professional networking organization comprised of individuals who value inclusion, drive innovation and business outcomes, and create value in the community. HAPI’s mission is to connect its members and cultivate personal and professional development, health and well-being, and a sense of belonging, rooted in advocacy and support for Asian and Pacific Islander communities. The NRG encourages everyone to be a HAPI member —all Humana employees are welcome and encouraged to join, regardless of background or experience.
Improving health equity and access
A consumer focus area of the HAPI NRG is improving the quality of care for API members. In 2022, NRG Co-President Nabila Anwar, Senior Quality Audit Professional, Market Quality Operations, leveraged her seats on the Houston Bold Goal Committee and Social Services Advisory Council to illustrate the importance of cultural competency and de-stigmatizing mental health for members and patients of all ages. Nabila shared resources the NRG has cultivated and makes available to support clinicians and social service providers throughout the organization who care for API customers and patients. HAPI membership has made similar presentations across the company focusing on allyship and support of API employees inside the walls of Humana.
Leaning into everyday leadership and collaborating for career growth
Focusing on their mission of cultivating development opportunities for members, the NRG hosted an Everyday Leadership coaching series led by Dr. Norma Tan. The series examined components of leadership through a cultural lens with topics that included being a leader in any role, making your voice heard, handling conflict and crafting a personal brand. Participants were encouraged to embrace their unique leadership skills, regardless of their position or title in the company. Self-awareness of individual passion and values were also discussed in terms of creating a personal brand that reflected one’s true strengths, rather than what an individual felt they were expected to do.
HAPI also joined forces with four other NRGs at Humana to create the Breaking the Concrete and Bamboo Ceilings Initiative to raise awareness about barriers to career advancement faced by many diverse populations and to create solutions to address bias and discrimination that remove barriers for all.
Connecting to community and celebrating culture
Caring for culture and community are important to HAPI NRG during times of celebration and of challenge. At the close of 2022, the group hosted HAPI Thoughts — an open forum for employees to reflect on the year and share what they might be struggling with. Several weeks later, HAPI reconvened to host a Courageous Conversation in response to the Monterey Park, Calif., shooting that killed 11 people and injured nine. The session provided a brave space for Humana employees to share their feelings about the tragic event and offered resources for additional support. HAPI has also held events to raise awareness about issues faced by API communities around the world, discussing issues that include health equity, human trafficking and the Human Rights Revolution in Iran.
Celebrating culture is equally important to HAPI members. The NRG has created a podcast series called Growing Up HAPI that features personal stories from API employees and hosts an ongoing HAPI music hour – both of which air on Humana’s internal radio station. The group holds regular HAPI Hours where employees can connect and network. As HAPI has done in past years during API Heritage month, the group will host cultural showcases, karaoke, trivia, cooking demos and other events to share the rich and varied culture of Asian and Pacific Islander cultures across the company in May.
