Meet Jennifer Pierce RN, BSN, CCM, Utilization Management Nursing Manager and Member Experience Lead for our Caregivers Network Resource Group (NRG). We spoke with Jennifer about what it means to be a caregiver and how Caregivers NRG supports Humana employees who are also caregivers.
“As a caregiver, when you are taking care of a loved one who is chronically ill, suffering from mental illness, substance abuse, whatever it may be; your mental well-being, it's going to be challenged like none other,” Jennifer says. “If you don't take care of yourself, you're going to be on the other end of that caregiving.”
As much as caregiving affects your mental health, it also takes a toll on your physical health, too. Caregivers often put their physical health behind that of their loved ones and end up giving up on their own needs to take care of others. As Jennifer says, it is just as important that we recognize that if caregiving is affecting you mentally, it is also affecting you physically.
“It's okay to ask for help. It's okay to take care of yourself. If you don't, you're going to be in a worse situation than you are,” says Jennifer. We recognize the toll that caregiving takes on our members and employees and are committed to improving the health outcomes for those receiving and providing care. Our Caregivers NRG strives to educate, inform and encourage employees who are dealing with a caregiving journey. The group is committed to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment to serve as a voice to guide and shape Humana’s understanding and efforts related to the health of caregiver employees and Humana members.
At Humana, we are all on a unique journey to our own best health, so through empathy and a personalized approach, we not only address medical needs, but meet people where they are by helping our employees, members, patients—everyone—address human needs, too.
