Medicare Advantage Provides Affordable, Higher Quality Care

When I heard Jerry McCoy say he was motivated to improve his health because he felt like the people at Humana and CenterWell were more concerned about him than he was, I was taken aback. That’s powerful. Knowing we helped someone regain hope for himself makes this business personal. It reminds me just how much every single interaction matters.

I encourage you to take a few minutes to watch Jerry’s personal story on YouTube – it is truly inspiring!

Jerry is a Humana Medicare Advantage member who has had diabetes for more than 20 years. He was on the verge of losing his legs when he started using the services at his local CenterWell Senior Primary Care center. By understanding him physically, mentally and socially, Jerry’s care team was able to help him get his medications, weight and health under control, so he could keep his legs and feel like he could live a normal life again.

This proactive, whole-person care approach plays a significant role in the overwhelming successes we have seen with Humana members like Jerry and with Medicare Advantage overall.

Individuals with chronic conditions who are enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans experience better health outcomes compared to those on Original Medicare plans, despite higher rates of clinical and social risk factors.

When compared to Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage beneficiaries are more likely to have a usual source of care. This generally translates into more frequent routine checkups, higher rates of vaccinations, and higher rates of various preventive screening services.

When their care teams are focused holistically on integrating and coordinating care, like in Jerry’s case, members typically see improved health outcomes. This is a priority with Medicare Advantage plans.

Primary care physicians (PCP) serve as the “quarterback” when managing each member’s care, especially those who require support to navigate multiple conditions and doctors. Compared to Original Medicare, more Medicare Advantage beneficiaries report specific care management practices, including discussions with health care professionals about their main goals and priorities in caring for their conditions and receiving clear instructions about how to treat their condition after being released from the hospital.

It's more focused on the quality of the care rather than the quantity of services provided, which ultimately results in improved health overall.

And better health outcomes aren’t the only win for those who choose Medicare Advantage. A new analysis has found Medicare Advantage beneficiaries report they are saving more than $2,400 on average per year on out-of-pocket costs and premiums when compared to Original Medicare beneficiaries. This is a $400 increase from last year’s reported annual savings.

With more than 30 million people choosing to enroll in Medicare Advantage in 2023, we see the importance of access to affordable, high-quality health care.

Through Medicare Advantage, Humana is working every day to remove barriers to health for millions of Americans, many like Jerry McCoy, who had lost faith in our health care system.

As Jerry said, “The thing about hope is knowing, believing that there is help.”

We want our members to understand they matter to us, and we are here to support them. Their health comes first.
