Ginnie Hammons, RN, BSN, has a passion for serving people. Nine years ago, Ginnie established a food bank at Life Church Louisville which evolved into The Louisville Dream Center, an outreach and community service organization dedicated to serving the needs of local communities. The Louisville Dream Center provides food for approximately 70 families each week and helps people find employment or placement into a recovery program, if needed. The Dream Center serves families with children, persons living with a disability and veterans. Ginnie volunteers 2-3 hours weekly and supervises up to 15 volunteers each week at the Dream Center.

We are excited to recognize Ginnie and honor her dedication to helping others prosper and thrive. In partnership with the Office of Inclusion and Diversity, the ACCESS Network Resource Group (NRG) has awarded Ginnie the 2022 Larry Hobert Award for her philanthropy and dedicated service to others. As a recipient of the award, she received a plaque and $250 gifted to a charity of her choice, for which she chose The Louisville Dream Center.

“Ginnie epitomizes what it means to give back to the community,” said Seamus O’Connor & Maggie Hoyle, ACCESS NRG Co-Presidents. Ginnie is a member of the ACCESS NRG which is committed to advocating for the inclusiveness of those impacted by disabilities within Humana and the members we serve.

Larry Hobert, an ACCESS NRG member for whom this award is named, possessed special abilities to bring people together through humor, to have open and honest conversations and to humanize people with disabilities. At Humana, we strive to create a workplace, healthcare system and world that values individuals for who they are—and ensures they have the care they deserve.

One of the most meaningful and beneficial activities we can engage in as individuals and as a community is to lift others up. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?”

In honor of his legacy of service, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is currently the only federally recognized National Day of Service. For those employees who have MLK Day off, we encourage them to view this day as an opportunity to give back and to consider the power they possess to make a difference in others’ lives by sharing their time, talents, skills and knowledge. Doing so helps us experience a greater sense of connectedness as we contribute to improving the lives of those in our communities.
