Lost and Found – A Story of Health Equity

Reverend Jerry McCoy has lived with diabetes for over 20 years. Due to the severity of his disease—with uncontrolled high blood sugar levels that were life-threatening—he was facing the possibility of amputation of both his legs.

Through a chance encounter during a Houston, Texas, church function hosted by CenterWell in Rev. McCoy’s community, he was introduced to Gail Venya, Houston Regional Operations Manager of CenterWell. Rev. McCoy approached Gail after the presentation about their services and healthcare approach and said, “Tell me more, because I have lost faith in the healthcare system.”

“When (Gail) gave that presentation, I felt excited. I felt like there was hope for me,” said Rev. McCoy, now a Humana member and CenterWell patient. CenterWell Senior Primary Care partners with health plans like Humana on wrap-around services that put patients first. This model of care integrates doctors, nurses, social workers, behavioral specialists and other professionals to focus on whole-person health.

Together with his physician, pharmacist, behavioral health team and care coaches, Rev. McCoy looked at all factors contributing to his life-threatening diabetes. Seeing the dedication of his team, he committed to truly being at the center of his care and taking control of his health. In just two months, his blood sugar levels were significantly lower, he had lost weight and his health changed dramatically for the better.  

“The thing about hope is knowing, believing, that there is help. I didn’t feel good, and because of me switching to Humana insurance there is an opportunity to do better,” Rev. McCoy said.

Rev. McCoy was also introduced to Dr. Nwando Olayiwola, Humana’s Chief Health Equity Officer and Senior Vice President, and the two have stayed in regular contact, most recently meeting in Houston in October 2022. “Mr. McCoy’s story is a perfect example of when the health system works well,” said Dr. Olayiwola. “We are really removing barriers; we’re giving him the opportunity to have the best health potential he can have, and we do it over and over again for millions of people.”
