Humana Helps Veterans and Military Spouses Start New Careers

Whether it's our members and patients, or our employees and their families, veterans and the military community have always been an important part of Humana. We understand the transition from military to civilian life can be challenging, so we are proud to be a corporate leader in supporting these communities. We work to provide employment and development opportunities to service members, veterans and military spouses. Doing so enhances our workforce and allows us to better serve the needs of our members and beneficiaries. Below are a handful of the ways that we’re committed to supporting our veteran and military connected members:

Veterans & Military Spouse Hiring Initiative
Humana launched the Veterans & Military Spouse Hiring Initiative in August 2011. Since then, we have hired more than 6,000 veterans and military spouses and continue to seek active duty transitioning service members, guard/reserve, prior military, and military spouses to join our team. The specialized knowledge and skills of our veteran and military spouse employees help us to better serve the military community. Humana currently administers health benefits for nearly 6 million active-duty military members and retirees through TRICARE.

Salute Network Resource Group
Humana's Salute network resource group (NRG) helps to advance understanding of the needs of active military and veteran consumers, while providing a forum for the exchange of ideas and building of community for Humana employees. The NRG’s mission is to serve as a first line resource on Humana policy, advocacy, health and community engagement for our military community.

Salute Military Transition Program
“Salute NRG is refreshing the military transition program at Humana to help employees grow in their careers,” said Jessica Rodriguez, Salute co-president. “Our goals are to increase veteran retention and success, provide emotional support and connection for newly transitioned veterans, and to train leaders to understand the needs of Humana military personnel.”

The Salute Military Transition Program is specifically designed for newly separated veterans and military spouses to help ease the transition from the military culture to a corporate culture. Salute helps military-connected employees leverage soft skills learned while on duty and connects them with Humana programs for upskilling, mental wellness and help with navigating the corporate environment.

In a study by VetAdvisor and the Institute for Veterans and Military Families, more than 43 percent of veteran respondents left their first private sector position within one year and over 65 percent left within two years. “This is the main reason we wanted to conduct the transition program,” said Mike Raley, Salute NRG member. “Speaking as someone who made that transition, it can be daunting to deal with culture changes, loss of responsibility, and starting over in an entirely different career.”
