Advancing health equity can only be successful when the responsibility to achieve it is shared and widely understood. Recognizing the need to further the company-wide commitment to health equity, Humana’s Health Equity and Social Impact (HESI) team announces the launch of the Humana Health Equity Advisory Council. Led by Chief Health Equity Officer and Senior Vice President, J. Nwando Olayiwola, MD, MPH, FAAFP, the council includes 19 leaders from across the company representing insurance services, primary care, home health, pharmacy, finance, corporate functions and equity-focused segments of the organization. The top priority of the council is to create a structure for accountability, as well as to provide a forum for integration and alignment of Health Equity focused initiatives across the entire company. The group will meet at least quarterly with the first meeting taking place at the end of May.
Formed in 2022 when the Health Equity and Community Engagement and the Bold Goal Population Health teams combined, the Health Equity and Social Impact (HESI) team is putting health first by helping remove structural barriers and addressing health-related social needs. HESI’s mission is to establish health equity as a key business and culture driver and embed it into Humana products, services and partnerships in order to improve health outcomes of communities, associates, patients and members, and enable our clinicians to deliver optimal and culturally competent care. To do this, the team is focusing on the strategic priorities of improving both access to and quality of care and addressing non-medical barriers to healthy living.
Inaugural Humana Health Equity Advisory Council members include:
Chair: Dr. J. Nwando Olayiwola, Chief Health Equity Officer and Senior Vice President, Health Equity and Social Impact
Council Coordinator: Faith Obanua, Health Equity Strategy Lead, Health Equity and Social Impact
“Humana’s CEO Bruce Broussard has made it clear that eliminating health disparities so our members and patients can achieve their best health requires everyone in the company to be engaged and committed,” said Dr. J. Nwando Olayiwola. “Our newly formed Health Equity Advisory Council gives us a critical structure for embedding health equity work across the enterprise and ensuring shared accountability as we work together towards our goals.”
