Dental Health Expectations Impact Patients and Providers

Evolving technologies and heightened consumer expectations combine to synergistically drive innovation and improved services. This is true in healthcare, particularly in specialties such as dental care.

In a recent study of 2,000 adults in the United States with dental health insurance, Humana found key factors that influence the decisions of dental patients who seek care include in-network status of providers and price transparency. Around 72% of respondents were at least somewhat influenced by in-network availability when choosing a dental provider, and 84% considered price transparency to be extremely or very important when selecting dental care. Our study also showed that most patients are comfortable with artificial intelligence (AI) technology to enhance their dental health experience.

For dentists, this means it is important to be strategic about joining health plans that provide network access to patients in your area, to be up-front with costs of preventive care and procedures, and to incorporate evolving technologies such as AI to improve the patient experience.
