Carolyn Tandy, SVP, Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Officer is recognized by Modern Healthcare as a Top Diversity Leader of 2023. The award honors healthcare executives whose DEI initiatives make meaningful impact in the quality of healthcare for members and patients across the country, and serve as compelling examples of prioritizing equity and inclusion amid a shifting industry.

Carolyn was recognized by Modern Healthcare for her leadership in shaping Humana’s DEI strategy. Within the company, she focuses on cultivating a culture of belonging to ensure that the company’s roughly 67,000 employees feel valued and have both the opportunity and support to reach their full potential. This work is executed across five focus areas – strategic business alignment, external partnership development, corporate compliance, a cultivated culture of inclusion and an advanced diverse talent strategy. While not an extensive list, some of the achievements that supported this recognition include:

  • Increased representation of BIPOC talent in Director level and above roles, a 1.55% increase over previous year end
  • Increased hiring and promotions for BIPOC talent into Associate Director and Lead roles, a 2.15% increase over previous year end
  • Equitable exits and retention of BIPOC talent in Associate Director and Lead level roles, currently at 2.4% above the company average
  • Increased enterprise-wide cultural competence, with over 94% of Humana’s executive leadership having completed cultural competency professional development training in 2022

Carolyn is intentional in her efforts to infuse Humana’s DEI initiatives across every area of the business, with the knowledge that employees’ cultural competency and sense of belonging directly impacts Humana’s ability to deliver better health outcomes for the diverse populations we serve, sharing that, “Only when all employees are responsible and accountable for this work, can we support the diverse needs of our members and patients in achieving their best health.”
