30 Million Seniors Choose Medicare Advantage

The Medicare Advantage program (MA) is one of the most successful public-private partnerships in history, and more seniors than ever are now taking advantage of the many benefits MA has to offer. The program hit an important milestone this week, with 30 million of America's seniors now choosing to enroll in an MA plan. MA enrollees now comprise half of the total Medicare population, a number that continues to grow year-over-year.

The program's success and enduring popularity are no secret: When seniors enroll in an MA plan, they are overwhelmingly happy with their decision. As of 2022, 94% of MA beneficiaries reported being satisfied with their current plan. And when seniors pick MA, they stick with it: Fewer MA enrollees later opt out in favor of traditional Medicare than the other way around.

America's seniors want to receive the best quality healthcare without breaking the bank—and Humana's MA plans not only make this possible, but easily accessible. MA enrollees have access to nearly $2,000 in extra benefits annually, and 99.9% of plans offer beneficiaries supplemental benefits. These benefits include vision and dental coverage, home health services, nutrition and transportation support, and zero-dollar drug premiums.

Supplemental benefits not only allow seniors to tackle health needs in the moment. Through Humana's MA plans, seniors receive value-based, cost-effective care that results in better health outcomes. For example, MA beneficiaries who develop Type 2 diabetes are able to receive earlier diagnoses than those in traditional Medicare, are more likely to receive preventative care, and are more likely to interface with a primary care provider and fill their necessary prescriptions. The result: MA beneficiaries who develop Type 2 diabetes have fewer emergency room visits and hospital admissions. MA's holistic approach to healthcare leads to early detection and active care management, which results in lower utilization of costly health services than traditional Medicare and better outcomes for our patients. These outcomes mean real savings for beneficiaries and the health system.

MA's holistic approach to healthcare is particularly important to those with social risk factors that drive health disparities. MA plans proudly serve a racially and ethnically diverse population of seniors and those of low- and modest-incomes.

Thirty million seniors nationwide have chosen to enroll in MA, because they recognize that MA's holistic, person-centered approach to healthcare leads to better health outcomes at lower costs. Humana proudly serves America's seniors, and is pleased to continue working with the government to deliver unparalleled care as part of the successful and growing MA program.
