National Mall of Pickleball - Humana News - 2023 - That's a wrap

Humana’s commitment to health is the foundation of everything we do. Throughout the past year, we’ve dedicated ourselves to improving the well-being of all those we serve. Join us as we recap the year and all the ways we have continued to put health first for our members, patients, employees and communities.

Quality care when and where our customers need it most
Our commitment to providing quality care when and where our members and patients need it most was underlined in our exceptional Star Ratings from the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS). These ratings evaluate the performance and quality of healthcare providers and plans, with higher ratings indicating excellent quality and service. Our continuous industry-leading Star Ratings, released for 2023 include:

  • 94% of our members are in plans rated 4 stars or higher
  • 61% of our members are in plans rated 4.5 or 5 stars
  • 5 out of 5-star rating for four contracts, covering approximately 790,000 members
  • Medicare Advantage plans rated 4 stars and above in all 50 states and Puerto Rico

Designed with affordability and customer feedback in mind, we expanded our 2024 Medicare Advantage (MA) plans to include dental, vision and hearing coverage – making healthcare more comprehensive for our MA beneficiaries. Our outstanding partnership with USAA lead to our exclusive co-branded Humana USAA Honor plans designed with veterans in mind to provide coverage options that complement health care benefits received through Veterans Affairs (VA).

This year CenterWell Primary Care opened their 250th senior care center and CenterWell Home Health saw a record number of branches recognized by Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) for clinical quality and patient satisfaction. CenterWell Pharmacy and CenterWell Specialty Pharmacy—one of the top benefits Humana members utilize as part of their health plan— was recognized with a SureScripts White Coat Award for their commitment to delivering millions of customers receive safe, reliable and affordable pharmacy care.

Improving access to and quality of care
It is important to us that every individual we serve receives care that respects their unique cultural context. We initiated comprehensive training programs in cultural humility, implicit bias, and health literacy designed to empower our employees with the knowledge and skills to provide care that is not only inclusive, but also sensitive to the diverse backgrounds and experiences of our members and patients. We also launched a newly formed Health Equity Advisory Council, with a top priority to create a structure for accountability, as well as to provide a forum for integration and alignment of Health Equity focused initiatives across the entire company.

Through strategic health equity-focused partnerships and the dedicated efforts of the Humana Foundation, which also launched a new strategy this year, we implemented initiatives focused on enhancing healthcare access and outcomes for diverse communities. The well-being of our communities is a critical component to our mission, and as such, we have invested significantly in programs and partnerships that support this vision like USAA’s Face the Fight initiative to end veteran suicide.

Continuing in our commitment to inclusion and belonging
We not only prioritize the health of our members, patients and communities but also cultivate a workforce that mirrors the diversity and resilience of those we serve. Our commitment to inclusion enables us to foster a culture where every employee feels that they belong—and our efforts to do so were recognized once again as a Top Employer for Diversity from Fair360, formerly DiversityInc. Additionally, we received a score of 100 on the Human Rights Campaign Corporate Equality Index making us a Best Places to Work for LGBTQ+ Equality for a 10th year in a row.

Our Supplier Diversity program grew stronger this year graduating our 5th class of mentors in the Mentor Protégé Program and being recognized by the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce  (NGLCC) and the National Business Inclusion Consortium’s (NBIC) “Best-of-the-Best” Corporations for Inclusion.

A champion for active aging
We’re proud to play a role in creating more inclusive, health-oriented communities. We continue to sponsor the National Senior Games and this year celebrated 10 years of Humana Game Changers—those senior athletes who exemplify healthy aging and defy senior stereotypes.

In recognition of pickleball’s rapidly growing popularity in the U.S., the increasing need for court space across the country, and the sport’s life-changing benefits both on and off the courts, we were proud to bring pickleball to more people in more places, especially seniors. In late-September, we proudly sponsored the National Mall of Pickleball, a free event to celebrate the National Mall and pickleball, its life-changing benefits, and those who have pioneered the most accessible and fastest-growing multi-generational sport in the U.S. – seniors.

The health of our planet and environment
Recognizing the connection between a healthy environment and the health of our communities, we proactively set ambitious near-term science-based emissions reduction targets. These targets were rigorously developed and received approval from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) which not only validates our approach to reducing our carbon footprint, but also strengthens our ability to be an environmentally responsible organization.

Wrapping up the year
This year has been a year of progress, with no shortage of significant accolades that underscore our commitment to excellence. Being recognized as one of the World’s Best Companies by TIME is a testament to our impact and dedication to health care innovation. Receiving the highest ranking among health insurers from Forrester for the third year in a row for customer experience speaks volumes about our focus on those we serve. And lastly, being certified as a Great Place to Work isn’t just an achievement for us, but a reflection of the supportive culture we have cultivated. These recognitions are a result of our collective effort and reinforce our dedication to setting benchmarks in healthcare services and workplace excellence.
