Humana inclusion and diversity

The IMPACT of Putting Health First in Our Communities

Serving the communities in which we live, creating a sense of belonging and encouraging diversity of ideas allows us to innovate and better serve our customers and put health first for all.

IMPACT, Humana's network resource group (NRG) for Black and African American employees and allies, is a voluntary, employee-driven professional networking organization comprised of individuals who value inclusion, drive innovation and business outcomes, and create value in the community.

IMPACT stands for:
Investing in the well-being of our communities
Maintaining excellence
Preparing Humana’s future leaders
Achieving success
Creating opportunities
Transforming the marketplace

Members of IMPACT NRG support the needs of the next generation of leaders by supporting families and children, investing in the well-being of communities, creating opportunities and helping future Black and African American employees achieve success.

Health of families and children
One consumer focus area of IMPACT NRG is addressing infant mortality and supporting maternal health. In 2022, IMPACT NRG volunteers worked with Louisville Coalition for Black Health to support Black Maternal Health Week, created to strengthen the voices of Black motherhood and to recognize and support the values and traditions of families.

This year during Black Breastfeeding Week, Humana Healthy Horizons will co-host the Chocolate Milk March 3K fundraising run/walk to raise awareness and fundraise for scholarships that support educating Black lactation professionals and local organizations that support Black breastfeeding.

Culture of belonging and collaboration
Collaboration across network resource groups demonstrates how our employee population comes together to create a culture of belonging. In 2022, IMPACT NRG and the Native American and Indigenous NRG (NA&I) held its first collaboration exploring the intersectionality of Black and Indigenous People and featured guest speakers including Andrina Wekentosh, author of “The Darker Red Road.”

When Humana hosted its inaugural Women’s Health Fair in the West End of hometown Louisville, IMPACT NRG partnered with the Women’s NRG at Humana to participate in a special panel discussion on Women’s Health, featuring IMPACT NRG Co-president Norrel Simiyu and Bruce Broussard, Humana CEO.

Support of our future leaders
Since 2010, IMPACT NRG's signature community program has been the YMCA Black Achievers mentorship program that creates equity in education and in the workplace by motivating African American/Black and other minority youth to pursue high educational and career goals. The program is open to high school seniors and last year Humana brought on 12 interns through the program.

In 2022, IMPACT NRG partnered with Grace James Academy, a STEAM-focused academy with an Afrocentric learning curriculum within Jefferson County Public Schools, in a mentorship program to provide support, guidance and resources. At the 3DE Junior Achievement event for students at Shawnee and Valley High Schools, IMPACT NRG volunteers helped provide guidance and support to help students work through brainstorming and problem-solving as they were presented with a real-world business challenge.
