Humana inclusion and diversity

Humana’s IMPACT Network Resource Group Supports Future Generations of Black and African American Leaders

Lifting each other up and nurturing a sense of belonging are important aspects of any culture and community. We are proud to foster an inclusive and diverse workforce that honors and celebrates the experiences of our employees, at work and in their communities.

Members of IMPACT, Humana’s network resource group (NRG) for Black and African American employees and allies, look to the future and support the needs of the next generation of leaders by creating opportunities and helping future Black and African American employees achieve success.

Support of our future leaders
Since 2010, IMPACT NRG's signature community program has been the YMCA Black Achievers mentorship program that creates equity in education and in the workplace by motivating African American/Black and other minority youth to pursue high educational and career goals.

In 2022, IMPACT NRG partnered with Grace James Academy, a STEAM-focused academy with an Afrocentric learning curriculum within Jefferson County Public Schools, in a mentorship program to provide support, guidance and resources. At the 3DE Junior Achievement event for students at Shawnee and Valley High Schools, IMPACT NRG volunteers helped provide guidance and support to help students work through brainstorming and problem-solving as they were presented with a real-world business challenge.

Since 2017, Humana has worked with the Consortium for Graduate Study in Management which partners with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) to recruit future leaders through fellowships and internships at American corporations.

Additional internship opportunities with Humana include Medicaid-specific partnerships through Southern University, Xavier University of Louisiana and Florida A&M University; undergraduate internship programs at Morgan State University, Kentucky State, Howard and Florida A&M; and MBA internship partnerships at Howard, Harvard, University of Chicago Booth School of Business, Vanderbilt, Flagler College, Wharton and Indiana University.

Encouragement of current employees and young professionals
We asked members of IMPACT NRG to share their thoughts on how to encourage current employees and young professionals of the future, what motivates them as individuals, what it means to be part of an inclusive workplace and how cultural identity impacts personal leadership style.

“I would encourage young Black and African American professionals to work every day as if it were their first day as an intern. Be curious, ask questions, put your best foot forward, and look to leave a positive impression in every room that you enter,” said Alford Beck, Jr., Enterprise Transformation Lead.

“I am motivated to help others, improve upon myself, and be a man that my children can be proud of, and respect,” said Jonathan Crawford, Enterprise Transformation Professional. “We are born into a world, where the odds are stacked against us…but through education and success, we can show the world how unbreakable we are.”

Tiffany Coates, Utilization Management Coordinator, said, “For me, inclusion means an amazing, fulfilling experience at work and beyond!”

“Don't be afraid to bet on yourself. You're more equipped than you think!” said Keiko Burrow, Claims Research & Resolution Representative. “It feels great to be a part of a company that understands inclusivity. I feel proud to be a Humana employee.”
