For the fourth consecutive year, Humana scored 100 on the Disability Equality Index. Globally, an estimated 1.3 billion individuals live with a disability, according to the World Health Organization. Disability may affect each of us at some point and does not discriminate, it crosses lines of age, ethnicity, gender, race, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status and religion.
We take intentional steps to build and maintain a culture of belonging where every employee feels valued and has both opportunity and support to reach their full potential. Making sure our workplace is inclusive and accessible to employees with any disability, visible or invisible, is part of this, as are inclusive recruiting, retention and supplier diversity practices. We believe when all employees thrive in the workplace, we become equipped to make better decisions for our customers to ensure we support their best health.
The Disability Equality Index (DEI) is a comprehensive benchmarking tool that helps companies build a roadmap of measurable, tangible actions that they can take to achieve disability inclusion and equality. Each participating company receives a score, on a scale of zero (0) to 100, with those earning 80 and above recognized as a “Best Place to Work for Disability Inclusion.” In 2023, 294 of 485 participating companies received a score of 100. We are proud to be one of those select companies.
Carolyn Tandy, Senior Vice President, Chief Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Officer, said, “Participating in the Disability Equality Index has been an important part of our overall DEI strategy and practices. The index provides our team with transparent, independent metrics on our accessibility efforts and progress. It’s also a way that we show our employees, customers, and the communities we serve who we are and what we believe in.”
When asked why participation in the Disability Equality Index is important, Maggie Hoyle, Co-President of ACCESS, Humana’s network resource group (NRG) for individuals impacted by disability, said, “Receiving this score of 100 on the Disability Equality Index highlights how beneficial it is to drive a culture of inclusion each day. ACCESS NRG is proud to disrupt bias surrounding disability and accessibility in the workplace.” ACCESS Co-President Seamus O’Connor added, “ACCESS NRG members are deeply invested in the work being done at Humana to foster an environment where each and every person can show up to work as authentically as possible. We are looking forward to how much more we can achieve on the back of this excellence.”
The DEI is a joint initiative of the American Association of People with Disabilities, the nation’s largest disability rights organization, and Disability:IN, the global business disability inclusion network, to collectively advance the inclusion of people with disabilities. The organizations are complementary and bring unique strengths that make the project relevant and credible to corporations and the disability community. The DEI Advisory Committee, a diverse group of business leaders, policy experts and disability advocates developed the Disability Equality Index. Learn more at: www.DisabilityEqualityIndex.org.
We support Disability:IN and American Association of People with Disabilities in the understanding that a company's inclusion efforts shouldn't stop once they score 100 on the DEI. A 100 score doesn't convey perfection, but instead demonstrates that forward-thinking disability inclusion practices have been implemented.
