When Steve McDonald joined Humana in 2016, he brought 32 years of experience as a law enforcement officer to the Executive Protection and Investigations team. He had worked with the U.S. Air Force Security Police and the U.S. Border Patrol prior to retiring at age 55.
To prepare to re-enter the workforce, Steve went back to school to earn a B.A. in Criminology and a M.A. in Criminal Justice Administration from the University of South Florida. Steve said, “I realized I needed to advance my education to be competitive since I was in my 50s.”

“At 67, I am the oldest person on my team, so I do agree that Humana is an age-friendly place to work,” said Steve who is an active member of GenUs, our network resource group dedicated to age diversity in the workplace. As a member of the safety and security team in his current role, Steve mentors younger members of his team to help them develop their skill set to reach the next level in their careers.
“Humana connects generations by emphasizing the life experience and training I bring to the team in my role as an investigator, and I enjoy serving as a mentor,” said Steve. “Our team is tasked with investigating workplace violence and incidents, drug diversion, thefts, and other criminal acts. I find the work enjoyable and rewarding since our primary goal is to keep people safe.”
