Understanding Generational Trust in Dental Health Education

When it comes to dental health, who patients trust for information often depends on when they were born. According to new insights from Humana, trust in oral health guidance varies widely across generations, and the sources patients turn to are shifting. While dentists remain the most trusted voice across all age groups, younger patients, especially those in Generation Z, are increasingly influenced by digital platforms. In fact, 39% of Gen Z trusts social media influencers for dental health tips, and 34% rely on podcasts.1 That’s a stark contrast to older generations such as the Silent Generation, only 10% of whom trust social media for such information.1

Health-focused websites, however, offer common ground, with most respondents across all generations rating them as trustworthy.1 This makes them an important bridge for delivering accurate, accessible education.

These insights highlight the growing need for dental professionals to adapt their approach and the need to educate patients both in and beyond the dentist’s chair. From digital touchpoints to personalized conversations, meeting patients where they are builds trust and fosters better health outcomes. As generational preferences continue to evolve, dental providers who understand these dynamics will be better positioned to remain trusted resources for years to come.
